In tufting, loops of yarn are mechanically woven into a backing material using numerous needles – this is how velour or loop pile carpets are produced.

The tufting process was developed in the USA in the late 1950s. It involves inserting the so-called pile yarn into a backing fabric or fleece – usually synthetic – in a loop-like pattern, using a method similar to that of a sewing machine but with several hundred needles operating simultaneously. Today, tufted carpets are available in velour (cut) or loop pile.
Here, the pile loops are cut open during the manufacturing process. Variations in the texture can be achieved by altering the fineness of the yarn, the type of yarn (filament or staple yarn), its composition (single-ply, multi-ply or twisted yarn) and the height of the pile. MODENA, for example, is a velour from our product range.
The name refers to the structure of the pile layer, which consists entirely of loops. The targeted use of the technical and aesthetic possibilities offered by the yarns, combined with the diversification of construction standards, opens up a wide range of design options.
Different visual effects can be achieved through loops of varying fineness and height, as well as loops of different shapes and densities. In our product portfolio, for example, all five designs in the Herz & Verstand collection are tufted loops.
