In woven carpets, the tufts are secured using spun binding yarns (warp, weft, and binding yarns). The base weave of such constructions inherently provides the carpet with a very high degree of strength and stability. Woven carpet is highly resistant to tensile, shear and tensile stresses (rolling, pushing – including heavy objects – etc.).
If a less heavily textured polyamide fibre material is used for the pile in woven fabrics, but in the form of a 2-ply spun yarn, the following is achieved:
The pile density – that is, the weight of the pile material above the backing in g/cm³, and thus of the actual wear layer – is generally a more meaningful indicator than the tuft count. In the case of woven carpets, the pile density is usually very high, even when the tuft count is low.
